Church of the Assumption
In the heart of the Montaña Palentina in Barrio de Santa Maria is the Church of the Assumption.
The original building was built at the end of the 12th century and has conserved its gospel nave and Romanesque apse, although what we see today is the result of renovations undertaken during the 16th century and the addition of a sacristy in the 18th century.
The floor plan is divided into two naves, which have barrel vaults, ribbed and starred cross vaults, with three decorated windows in the apse.
The Renaissance doorway with a semicircular arch is adorned with a stone carving of the Virgin and Child.
Inside, hidden in the vault of the Romanesque apse, there are 15th century Gothic mural paintings with scenes of the Assumption and other saints. There are also bas-reliefs from the Palencia school on the main altarpiece from the 16th century.
However, these are not the only treasures found in the chapel. It also contains a Christ and a Gothic carving of St. Mary with Child, both from the 14th century, and an 18th century altarpiece.
