Las Compuertas viewpoint
Las Compuertas Viewpoint is one of the most iconic vantage points along the River Segre and Utxesa Reservoir Nature Trail. Situated next to the area where the water flow of the reservoir and the Seròs Canal controlled using the reservoir’s hydraulic system, this small space offers a sweeping panoramic view of the wetland and helps visitors understand the close relationship between water management and nature conservation.
Visitors reach the viewpoint via a gravel path surrounded by herbaceous vegetation and Mediterranean scrub. On the left, a Nature Trails signpost clearly identifies the location, while there is also a platform fitted with wooden railings and benches for visitors to rest on. The location, which is slightly elevated above the immediate surroundings, offers unobstructed views of the reservoir and the farmland that characterise this corner of the comarca of Segrià.
From this vantage point, visitors can observe how the light changes across the water’s surface and the reed beds that line the wetland. The area is particularly attractive for birdwatching, as the Utxesa reservoir is one of the most important inland wetlands in Catalonia and a regular refuge for numerous aquatic and migratory bird species.
The name of the viewpoint refers to the compuertas or sluice gates that regulate the flow of water within this complex hydraulic infrastructure. These facilities make it possible to regulate the water flows used for irrigation and hydroelectric power generation, functions that have shaped the region’s recent history. Las Compuertas viewpoint combines scenic appeal, environmental value and hydraulic heritage, making it an ideal stop to understand the workings and importance of the Utxesa reservoir.
