Elevated birdwatching hide
The elevated birdwatching platform forms part of the network of environmental facilities along the River Segre and Utxesa Reservoir Nature Trail, one of the most important inland wetlands in Catalonia for wildlife watching. Situated alongside reed beds, floodplains and farmland, the viewpoint offers a sweeping panoramic view of the mosaic of habitats that characterise the area around the reservoir and the Segre Valley.
The structure, built of wood and raised on stilts, provides a wider viewing angle than enclosed shelters situated at ground level. The structure features a covered upper platform, accessible via stairs, designed to facilitate birdwatching without disturbing the wildlife. From this type of tower, it is possible to survey vast areas of water and marshland vegetation, which is particularly useful for spotting waterbirds and migratory species.
The area around Utxesa is notable for its great ornithological value. The reservoir, built in 1914 as a regulating reservoir for the Seròs Canal, eventually became an important wetland for resident and migratory birds. Reed beds, pools of water and riverside woodlands provide a refuge for species like herons, storks, mallards, cormorants and numerous other wetland birds.
Birdwatching centres also play an important role in education and raising awareness, promoting responsible wildlife observation and helping people to understand the importance of conserving the ecosystems of River Segre and Utxesa reservoir.
