Molí d’Utxesa (Utxesa mill)
The Utxesa Mill is one of the most unique historic buildings to be found in the area around the River Segre Nature Trail and the Utxesa Reservoir. Situated beside the water and surrounded by riverside vegetation, this old watermill stands as a valuable testament to the relationship between the use of water and the traditional economic activities of the Segrià region. It is listed as part of Catalonia’s Architectural Heritage.
Built between the 19th and 20th centuries, it is currently in a state of partial disrepair. It is a sturdy-looking building, set in a damp environment and shaded by poplars, reeds and lush vegetation. The walls feature a combination of stone, masonry and rammed earth, while ivy climbs up the façades, covering part of the structure and lending it the appearance of a historic ruin. The footpath, fitted with wooden handrails, allows visitors to approach the building and view its architectural remains at close quarters.
Water mills such as the one at Utxesa harnessed the power of channelled water to drive mechanisms used primarily for grinding grain. For centuries, these facilities played a vital role in the rural economy, as they enabled grain to be ground into flour and supplied the surrounding farming communities. In the case of the Utxesa Mill, the opening through which the water channel that powered the machinery inside used to flow is still preserved, as are original structural features of great heritage interest.
The mill’s location, next to the reservoir and within a natural rich ecological area, makes this spot particularly attractive. From the vicinity of the building, one can see the waters of the reservoir, areas of reed beds and various habitats used by waterbirds and migratory birds. These days, although it no longer serves its original purpose, the Utxesa Mill continues to form part of the cultural landscape of the reserve and serves as a reminder of the historical importance of harnessing water in the transformation of the region.
