Tunnel
This particular railway tunnel was built through a mound that posed an obstacle to the route of the railway line that extended between the Ojos Negros iron ore mine to the port of Sagunto for the distribution of raw materials. At approximately 393 m long, it overcame the peculiar orography of the terrain and saved the hassle of diverting the route of the railway, which would have increased the length of the route.
The tunnel is built of stone, which reduces the impact on the surrounding landscape, and it blends in quite well with its surroundings, as its colour and texture are similar to those of the land.
At one end of the tunnel, the entrance is embedded in a ravine carved out of the rock, an unusual sight on this route characterised by its open spaces. Today, this old railway tunnel is part of the route included within the national network of Nature Trails. It means that this pass, located between two of Teruel's ravines, is perfectly conditioned and cyclists. Also, although it is equipped with lighting witing, walkers are recommended to carry a torch, nonetheless.
