Rambla de Peñaflor viaduct
This impressive structure formed part of the defunct railway line that connected the Ojos Negros mine operated by the Compañía Minera de Sierra Menera with the Valencian port of Sagunto for the distribution of raw materials. The bridge was built in stone and its colour and texture were kept in keeping with the surrounding elements. The viaduct is 90 m long and features of five arches that allowed the railway to pass over the Peñaflor watercourse.
The Peñaflor rambla is a seasonal watercourse carrying a stream primarily of rainwater which flows into the River Mijares. It runs close to the A-23 road as it passes between the Teruel municipalities of La Puebla de Valverde and Sarrión, and which joins up downstream with the Ballomba ravine.
These types of streams and brooks appear frequently in this part of Teruel province and offer the fauna and vegetation a perfect refuge in these arid lands with their harsh climate conditions. They are, therefore, essential features with their humidity providing an environment that supports a rich biodiversity. Its location on a slope makes also makes it impossible for the surrounding land to be used to grow crops, benefiting the wild flora and fauna in ecosystems that become essential ecological corridors.
