Old Sarrión station
This is an old, abandoned railway station located in the Teruel municipality of Sarrión. It was part of the mining railway line that transported the raw materials extracted from the Ojos Negros iron mine in the province of Teruel - belonging to the Compañía Minera de Sierra Menera - to the port of Sagunto for subsequent distribution. The mining company created its own railway line due to the high prices imposed by the Compañía Central de Aragón on the line between Zaragoza and Sagunto. So in 1907, the first railway began to run through this station, inaugurating a route that was active until 1972, when the line was definitively closed.
The creation of this railway helped to promote the development of the municipalities of this region that were close to the route and whose economy depended to a great extent on this mine. A route was devised that provided some impetus for the economy of Teruel and brought significant benefits to an area of the peninsula that has traditionally suffered from economic difficulties.
With the closure of this railway route, the station located in Sarrión was abandoned, and so today it stands in ruins. The clearest evidence of this is that the station roof has completely caved in.
However, the surroundings of this old railway infrastructure have been brought back to life, as the old railway line has been restored and transformed into a greenway as part of the Nature Trails network and allows walkers and cyclists to enjoy this little bit of history.
