San Ginés hermitage
Mount San Ginés, located at an altitude of over 1,600 m, in the heart of the Sierra Menera mountain range, is the highest peak in the Jiloca Valley.
At the summit, besides the ruins of an old watchtower, several television and telephone aerials and a geodesic vertex, there is a newly built chapel dedicated to San Ginés.
The building has a square floor plan and a hipped roof. It was built using masonry stone and ashlars of rodeno, a very characteristic stone of the area, placed in the corners as reinforcement.
Access is through a pointed arch doorway in which the well-known ashlar masonry of rodeno has also been used. The splayed arch in the central nave indicates that this chapel may have been designed with larger dimensions than it finally had. The exterior features a covered portico at the base.
The enclave offers spectacular views of the surrounding area, with large expanses of both Aragon and Castile-La Mancha.
The inhabitants of the village of Rodenas usually go on a pilgrimage to this place three days before the Ascension. A mass is then held and the participants spend the day in the countryside. For their part, the inhabitants of Peracense, the municipality to which the hermitage belongs, hold their own particular pilgrimage on 25 August.
