Santa Bárgara hermitage
The Santa Bárbara hermitage is on the outskirts of the Teruel village of Báguena, near the province’s border with Zaragoza, in the District of Jiloca.
The year it was built is unknown; it is a small church with a single small nave, topped by a gable roof with a moulded cornice. The doorway is a lintelled arched opening with a small flared oculus in a pediment formed by the downspouts of the roof and the aforementioned cornice.
Besides the hermitage, there is an adjoining building, attached to the chancel, which may at one time have been a shed. This building is lower and, unlike the temple, it has a pitched roof.
The temple is the scene of the pilgrimages from the nearby villages of Calamocha and Torralba de los Sisones.
The first of them takes place on the first Sunday in May. This feast is related to the ancient celebrations of the May cross and boundary blessing. During this festival, the stewards of the brotherhood would give out cakes and drinks to the pilgrims and invite the authorities present to a meal. A popular mass is held, after which, to protect the harvests, the boundaries are blessed from the hill. In the late afternoon, a dance is organised, before they go down to the Santo Cristo hermitage, in the village, to give thanks for having had an enjoyable day. The pilgrimage from Torralba de los Sisones is held on the second Sunday in May.
