Báguena
Báguena is a municipality in Teruel, in the District of Jiloca, in the northwest of Teruel, 85 km from the provincial capital and 94 km from Zaragoza.
Its name derives the Latin word vacuus, meaning unoccupied, deserted or empty.
The first settlers in the municipality of Báguena date to the 12th century, as part of the so-called Daroca Council Repopulation Plan, which was instigated by the Count of Barcelona, Ramón Berenguer IV.
However, thefirst document mentioning the place dates from 1205, when the then-bishop of Zaragoza, Raimundo de Catrocol, distributed the tithes among the churches of the Community of Hamlets of Daroca. In that document, Báguena was attached to the parish of Santa María de Daroca, before becoming part of the Sesma del Campo de Gallocanta.
As regards the village’s architectural heritage, the Baroque church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción stands out. Construction began in 1403, in response to the population of the village increasing, with Pascual de Ejulve being commissioned to build it. Over time, the church has been remodelled several times, the most significant being the 17th century extension, which resulted in the church’s current appearance.
But the most remarkable feature of the church is the five-bay tower, built by the master mason Pedro de Aguilera, which has beautiful Mudejar decoration and ornamentation, making it one of the most beautiful towers in the province of Aragon.
Báguena’s religious monuments also notably include: the 17th century San Valentín Convent, built under the Order of the Franciscan Poor Clares; and several hermitages, such as the Los Dolores, Santa Bárbara, San Ambrosio and San Valentín Hermitages.
It is also worth visiting the 14th century Báguena Castle, which fell into the hands of the Knights Templar after the Christian conquest; the 18th century bridge over the River Jiloca; and the various palatial houses in the centre of the village: Casa Calvo or Casa Lucías, both of which are from the 17th century.
Báguena is in a privileged natural setting, in whose surroundings you can enjoy the Arguilay spring, the course of the River Jiloca, the San Ambrosio spring and the Gallocanta Lagoon.
As for the local festivities, the patron saint festival in honour of San Blas held on 3 February, the main festival of San Ramón Nonato is on 31 August and the festival of Holy Christ of the Miracles takes place on 14 September.
