Municipality
Golmayo
This Soria municipality is located in the San Marcos mountain range and is only five kilometres from the provincial capital. It is precisely this proximity to Soria that has seen the town's population grow rapidly in recent years, becoming one of the most demographically dynamic municipalities in the area, with a current population of 2,568 inhabitants. The inhabitants of the municipality are distributed across ten nuclei that make up the municipality.
It has a privileged natural enclave and several protected areas included in the Natura 2000 Network. Among the most striking features are La Toba Waterfall, an imposing waterfall over 20 m high that rises between the peaks of the Frentes peak, and the holm oak forest of Camparañón. Around the village of Golmayo itself, there are numerous hiking routes for locals and visitors alike to immerse themselves in this privileged and wooded natural setting.
The economy of Golmayo has traditionally been based on agriculture, in which the main protagonist was the cultivation of cereals. In recent years, however, other economic sectors - linked to the population growth of the town - such as construction, commerce and electricity production have taken off.
With regard to the municipality's heritage, the Monastery of La Monjía, built between the 15th and 16th centuries, and the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Golmayo are particularly noteworthy. The Ethnological Site of La Cuenca is also well worth a visit.
Local festivities in the area include a pilgrimage in mid-August in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. The last weekend of the same month also sees the Santa Bárbara festivals. However, each of the hamlets that make up Golmayo has its own patron saint and popular festivals, which means the municipal area boasts a wide variety of festivals and entertainment activities.
