Ocenilla
Since the end of the 20th century, Ocenilla has been administratively dependent on the town council of Cidones. The village boasts a privileged location, on the slopes of the Sierra de Cabrejas mountains. In fact, Ocenilla offers views of the imposing Pico Frentes peak, as well as the city of Soria, which is only 15 km away. Its privileged natural environment means that there are numerous hiking routes in the surrounding area that take you deep into the natural landscapes that surround the town.
The archaeological sites found show that the area where Ocenilla stands today has been inhabited since the Iron Age. In fact, in the village of Ocenilla, a 3rd or 2nd century BC Celtiberian castro hill fort was discovered, consisting of a wall and towers next to the entrance gate. According to archaeological studies of the site, the settlement was inhabited up until the Visigothic period.
The economy of Ocenilla is mainly based on cattle farming. The architectural heritage of this small village, with just over 80 inhabitants, includes the Church of San Esteban and the Shrine of San Antonio. The locals also celebrate their main festivals in honour of these saints: the pilgrimage of San Antonio in mid-June and the celebration in honour of San Esteban just after Christmas.
