Villaverde del monte
This is a small village in Soria that belongs to Cidones Council. Its location in a natural setting surrounded by wide expanses of pine forests and sheltered by the imposing mountains of the Sierra de Cabrejas make it a perfect destination for lovers of tranquillity and rural tourism, with several hiking routes in the area for walkers to really immerse themselves in the environment, just 19 km from the city of Soria.
A number of streams run through the surrounding area, such as the Pago stream, which joins the Pedrajas River shortly afterwards. The vegetation in the vicinity of Villaverde del Monte includes species Spanish juniper and Pyrenean oak, as well as aromatic herbs such as thyme, camomile, tea, lavender and elder.
The economy of this small town in the province of Soria is based mainly on agriculture, with cereal and sunflower crops, as well as sheep farming and the exploitation of the forests that surround the town centre. Mushroom production is also important.
The town's heritage includes the Church of San Pedro, built in the 18th century, with its slender tower. It is also worth visiting the Shrine of Nuestra Señora de La Asunción, a Romanesque building just one kilometre from the village. In the 17th and 18th centuries, new buildings like the sacristy were added on. The town's civil architecture includes a 16th century palace-house, converted into a restaurant.
Residents Villaverde del Monte celebrate the pilgrimage of the Virgen de la Asunción every 15 August. Meanwhile, 29 June sees the celebration in honour of San Pedro, patron saint of this municipality, take place.
