Fuentetoba
Fuentetoba is a locality that belongs to the municipality of Golmayo in the province of Soria. It is located in a unique natural environment with an important environmental and landscape value. It sits at the foot of the Frentes peak, where the Golmayo River rises before flowing through the area.
The source of this river has an impressive upwelling derived from the infiltration of rainwater into the mountain. This causes the water to flow in the vicinity of this locality forming an abundant and attractive waterfall, known as La Toba, at more than 20 m high, over the rock formations. This is the origin of one of the most important hydrological phenomena in the natural environment of the province of Soria and one of the main attractions of this small locality.
According to historical information, the origin of Fuentetoba is to be found in the Christian repopulation of the area after the reconquest in the 12th century. Inhabitants from the Rioja municipality of Valvanera were brought here to establish this small village.
The architectural heritage of the municipality includes the Church of San Martín de Tours and the Monastery of Monjía, both from the 16th century. Also in the vicinity of the town is a spot known as the Peña de los Plantíos, a site consisting of different representations of cave art dating from the Bronze Age.
In Fuentetoba, locals celebrate their festivals on 8 September in honour of La Virgen de Valvanera. A pilgrimage dedicated to San Martín is also held on 11 November.
