Herreros
Herreros is a small locality and village in Soria that is administratively dependant on the municipality of Cidones. The village of Herreros, which has around 75 inhabitants, is located in a privileged spot, next to the Cuerda del Pozo reservoir and a small hill surrounded by large extensions of pine and oak woods, which give it an impressive green landscape.
Although there were earlier human settlements, the urban centre as it is known today dates back to the 12th century, when these lands were repopulated after the Christian reconquest. These first settlers of the municipality were mainly dedicated to manipulation of iron, which is why the village was given the name of Ferreros, in allusion to this trade, which by purely phonetic derivation would end up becoming Herreros (blacksmiths).
For years, the main economic engine of this small village was the transport of materials by means of carts. In fact, Herreros was part of the Real Cabaña de Carreteros, an association that disappeared with the arrival of the railway, resulting in the decline of this economic activity.
Herreros was an independent municipality until the end of the 20th century, when it was integrated as part of the locality of Cidones, becoming administratively dependent on this neighbouring village. The architectural heritage of the municipality includes the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the Shrine of La Soledad and the Shrine of San Roque, all of which were built during the 16th century. An old horseshoeing stock remains standing in the area, evidence of the importance of this type of tool in this rural environment.
Herreros celebrates festivals in honour of the Virgen de la Asunción and San Roque. On the same dates, a popular caldereta is organised every year in the municipality where the locals gather to enjoy traditional gastronomy.
