Aceña de Lara
Aceña de Lara is one of the administrative districts of the municipality of Jurisdicción de Lara. There are currently just over 8 residents living in the old houses of this hamlet, consisting of a handful of houses and a shrine amidst the peace and tranquillity set to a soundtrack of the sounds of nature. All the municipalities belonging to Jurisdicción de Lara suffered an abrupt depopulation mid-20th century on, causing the population of these municipalities to fall suddenly and rapidly, as many of their inhabitants decided to leave behind this environment in the Sierra de la Demanda to seek opportunities in cities like Burgos and Madrid, where industrialisation led to job creation.
Despite the small population of Aceña de Lara today, it is known that the municipality has been inhabited for centuries. In fact, there is a cave in the vicinity that served as a home for some of first settlers of this part of Burgos. The name comes from the Arabic place-name as-Sānīa, meaning 'the waterwheel'. The landscape that can be enjoyed from this small village is characterised by gentle undulations and flat land dotted with crop fields through which the streams and brooks that rise in the shelter of the mountain peaks of the nearby Sierra de la Demanda mountain range meander.
