Municipality
Cubillejo de Lara
This is a small municipality, administratively dependent on the village of Mambrillas de Lara, is located in the heart of the province of Burgos, in the natural environment of the Sierra de la Demanda. The rural exodus suffered in the area means that today the population of this hamlet is just 9 inhabitants. In terms of heritage, the local church stands out for its Romanesque baptismal font.
Despite its small size, this hamlet boasts important archaeological value, with an important dolmen in the vicinity, the scope and significance of which was not discovered until 1970, although the locals of Cubillejo had long considered the possibility that those stones placed around the town had an important meaning for the first settlers of the area. The architectural structure of the dolmen is known as a corridor tomb, with burial chamber and a corridor that provides access within a tumulus of earth and stones.
Also of special archaeological significance are the engravings found in this dolmen, believed to have been made after the construction of this structure. In addition to the dolmen, an important number of funerary tribute items were found in the area, including stone objects, ceramics, weapons and ornaments. Among the items, researchers found a bracelet made from a Glycymeris shell, of Mediterranean origin, which is evidence of the existence at that time of routes linking the Levant with this part of the province of Burgos, probably via the Ebro River.
In terms of local festivals in the hamlet of Cubillejo de Lara, the most important is the feast day of San Martín, celebrated by the locals every 11 November.
