Torrelara
Torrelara is a small municipality in Burgos with barely 25 inhabitants in the privileged natural environment of the Sierra de la Demanda mountains. The local church, dedicated to San Millán, stands on a small hill. It is believed that during the Middle Ages it was part of the area's surveillance system, which served to protect the local inhabitants and warn of possible enemy attacks. The axis of this extinct medieval fortress that surrounded the area was precisely on this hill, in the castle of Lara, of which nothing has survived today and whose place is now occupied by the parish of Torrelara. The hillock on which the church stands allows it to be seen from miles away, making it an iconic building in the town. This building is a late Gothic church with a Romanesque baptismal font inside.
The hamlet of Torrelara itself grew around a hillside next to the Church of San Millán, through which small streams from the peaks of the Sierra de la Demanda also flow. The development of the municipality is characterised by its simple streets dotted with single-storey stone houses, generally built in masonry and often with an adjoining plot dedicated to family vegetable gardens, giving this hamlet a peaceful atmosphere that makes it a perfect destination for lovers of rural tourism and nature. It is also the starting point for a number of hiking routes to discover more of this part of the province of Burgos. The municipality has also seen an increase in visitors in light of an important archaeological find, with fossils belonging to a giant dinosaur that may have been 15 to 20 metres tall were recently found in the area around Torrelara.
For the residents of Torrelara, the most important date on the calendar is 10 July, for the celebrations in honour of San Cristóbal, as well as 16 August for the feast day of San Roque. In November, another of the most important dates is the feast day of San Millán, celebrated between the 12th and 14th of that month.
