Paules de Lara
Paúles de Lara is a small hamlet belonging to the Jurisdicción de Lara, some 40 km from the provincial capital, in the surroundings of the Sierra de la Demanda mountain range. It currently has just over 20 inhabitants, although the archaeological remains discovered in the area have turned it into a place that attracts more and more visitors to this region of Burgos. In the vicinity of the site, vestiges of past eras have been found, dating back to the age of the dinosaurs; in fact, several fossil remains have been found belonging to a dinosaur femur. The first humans to inhabit the Peninsula also left their mark on this municipality located not far from the famous Atapuerca cave, proof of which are the important archaeological remains that show that there were also important human settlements on the slopes of the Sierra de la Demanda at that time.
During the Roman period, this small hamlet was also inhabited, as evidenced by the stelae and coins from that period found in the parish church of the municipality, dedicated to San Pedro Apóstol and built during the first half of the 18th century. However, the layout of what today is a small hamlet didn’t emerge until the early Middle Ages. Today the municipality is dominated by popular architecture with houses built in stone, usually in masonry, limestone or sandstone.
The highlight of the year in Paúles de Lara is the patron saint festivities in honour of San Pedro, which take place in early August, while the first Sunday in October is the feast day of the Virgen del Rosario.
One of the main attractions here are the natural surroundings, with several hiking routes to discover the area located in the vicinity of the Sierra de la Demanda mountain range. Archaeology lovers will also find here a place to discover some of the most important prehistoric settlements in Spain, which are spread throughout the surrounding area.
