Pedraja de San Estebán
Pedraja, also known as Pedraja de San Esteban, is a small town in the municipality of San Esteban de Gormaz. It is located between the Soria towns of El Burgo de Osma and San Esteban.
The history and origins of this hamlet are closely linked to those of San Esteban de Gormaz, which date back to the 1st century BC. A Celtiberian settlement and settlement were established on a rise in the land next to the Duero riverbed, which acted as a natural barrier.
During the 9th-century conquest of the area by Alfonso III's troops, Pedraja was established as a border territory between the Christian kingdoms and the Caliphate, situated on the banks of the Duero River. Until the Caliphate of Córdoba disappeared at the beginning of the 11th century, when the Christian presence in the area was consolidated.
The town's architectural monuments include the parish church of Santa María Magdalena, which was restored in 1991. It is also worth noting the natural site known as El Vergazal, which leads to the Fuente Retuerta spring.
The typical Pedraja product is the cake and flour cake, as well as the wines made in the traditional wine presses and cellars of the locality.
The patron saint festivities will take place on 22 June, in honour of Santa María Magdalena.
