Alcubilla del Marqués
The hamlet of Alcubilla del Marqués is located within the municipality of El Burgo de Osma, in the Castilian province of Soria. The village is situated 5 km from the town of El Burgo on a high conical hill.
The term alkúba is derived from Arabic and refers to a vat or water chest.
Historical references indicate that a fortification of Muslim origin existed on the hill of Alcubilla. However, it may have been destroyed during the raids carried out by Abderramán III at the end of the 10th century. These events are believed to be the origins of this locality, although there are currently few remaining traces of the Muslim presence in the area.
At the end of the 20th century, this municipality disappeared to become part of the municipality of Burgo de Osma-Ciudad de Osma.
The town's most notable monuments include the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. The Gothic-style temple has its origins in the Romanesque period, during which various paintings were preserved in its interior, as well as a Gothic altarpiece and the image of the Virgen de la Piedra.
The remains of the old Alcubilla Tower can also be seen at the top of the hill, which has been designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest. This is an Islamic structure erected during the Middle Ages as part of the defensive system on the banks of the Duero.
The ethnographic museum in Alcubilla del Marqués is another noteworthy attraction. It has been open to the public since 1981 and is located in the old town hall building. The display includes a variety of farm implements and other utensils used in the production of bread and wine. In addition to domestic documents, kitchen furniture and utensils related to the old trades of the area and farm work.
The museum's significance is derived from the region's long-standing wine-making tradition, which is evident in the numerous underground cellars that can be observed along the hillside.
The festivities in Alcubilla will take place on 25 and 26 August, in honour of the patron saint, San Lorenzo. ;
