Osma
Osma is a town in the province of Soria, situated on the banks of the river Ucero. It forms part of the municipality of El Burgo de Osma-Ciudad de Osma, along with the town of El Burgo de Osma.
The history of this locality is inextricably linked to the rise of the Celtiberian-Roman city of Uxama Argaela, which has been documented as existing since the second Iron Age (4th century BC). During the Visigothic period, around the 6th century, the city became an episcopal see.
Following the arrival of the Muslim troops, this settlement was abandoned until it was repopulated in 912. The area became a source of contention between Christian and Muslim troops until the fall of the Caliphate of Córdoba at the beginning of the 11th century.
In the latter part of the 20th century, Osma was merged with the municipality of El Burgo, thus establishing the current municipality of El Burgo de Osma - Ciudad de Osma.
One of the town's most notable landmarks is the Baroque church of Santa Cristina, constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries and situated on the banks of the river Ucero.
The temple is designed in the Latin cross plan and comprises a single nave covered by a barrel vault with lunettes, with a dome shaped like a half orange dome on pendentives covering the transept. The structure boasts a Renaissance façade, constructed in the second half of the 16th century.
It is also worth noting the Castle of Osma, constructed in the 10th century during the reign of Ramiro II of León. The fortress, situated on a rocky outcrop between the Abión and Ucero riverbeds, was of great strategic importance. It served as the main defensive bastion of the Kingdom of León on this side of the Duero.
Additionally, the area boasts a medieval bridge of Roman origin, known as the Puente de la Torre del Agua. This bridge served as a link between the ancient Roman cities of Uxama Argaela and Augustóbriga. The bridge is constructed from masonry and has the shape of an ass's back, a common feature of medieval bridges. However, some of the materials used for its construction appear to be from an earlier Roman construction.
The local festivities will take place on 24 and 25 July, in honour of Santa Cristina and Santiago. And on 21 September the fiestas of San Mateo take place.
