Tunnel 7 Cruz del Abarquero
Tunnel 7, Cruz del Abarquero, at 540 metres long, is one of the longest and most emblematic passages of the Renacimiento Greenway Nature Trail. Completely unlit inside, visitors must carry a torch or lighting device to pass through the tunnel safely.
The name 'Cruz del Abarquero' refers to ancient geographical landmarks and customs linked to the historical paths of the area, recalling the existence of crosses or milestones that guided walkers and muleteers along these mountain ranges. So the tunnel not only constitutes a natural challenge due to its extension and darkness, but also connects the visitor with the legends and ancestral traditions of the territory.
The entrance portal, robust and harmoniously lined with hexagonal blocks, is a clear example of late 19th century railway engineering. The entrance, framed by native vegetation and the living rock of the trench, conveys the sense of adventure and discovery characteristic of the Nature Trail.
This pass was part of the failed Baeza-Utiel railway line, a project intended to boost mining and transport at the beginning of the 20th century but which was finally abandoned in 1964, after 78% of the works had been completed.
