Tunnel 2
Tunnel 2 is part of the works planned within the framework of the Baeza-Utiel railway, an ambitious railway infrastructure undertaken in the 1920s that aimed to connect Andalusia with the Spanish Levante region. This section, located between Balazote and El Jardín, preserves several engineering works that ultimately never came into service, testimony to a line that was definitively interrupted in 1963 without having ever seeing a train.
Excavated in loamy terrain with a gentle slope, this tunnel stands out for its correct technical execution and the way it has become perfectly integrated into the landscape of La Mancha. However, the current Renacimiento Greenway Nature Trail does not pass through the tunnel; rather the route was modified to guarantee the safety and continuity of the route.
The tunnel is currently located inside a fenced private property, so it is not possible to enter or approach it. Access is prohibited and both the property and the surrounding natural environment must be respected.
Although hidden from sight, this tunnel is still a representative element of Balazote's railway heritage and an example of the construction efforts of a time when the railway project symbolised progress and territorial connection.
