Tunnel 5 Peña Bermeja II
The Peña Bermeja II Tunnel, with a length of 310 metres, is completely unlit, so you must carry a torch or headlamp to cross it safely. Just a few metres in from the entrance, it is pitch dark, making for an intense and memorable experience.
The tunnel is named after the Peña Bermeja, the rock formation that dominates the surrounding landscape and gives a characteristic reddish hue to the natural walls of the gorge. The infrastructure blends harmoniously into the rugged landscape with its hexagonal ashlar cladding, visible on its outer walls, and a carefully carved semicircular arched mouth. The rock cuttings can still be seen on the sides, which is evidence of the remarkable excavation work carried out during the construction of the railway line.
This infrastructure belonged to the old Baeza-Utiel railway, an ambitious project undertaken in the first half of the 20th century which, in spite of its advanced state of construction, never came into service. The infrastructure built for the line, including viaducts, trenches and several tunnels such as Peña Bermeja II, reflect the railway engineering criteria of the time: layouts protected against the instability of the terrain, solutions to overcome abrupt reliefs and works designed for long-distance trains.
