Entrambasaguas
The area known as Entrambasaguas is a natural area where the waters of the River Pancrudo and the River Jiloca meet, in the municipality of Calamocha (Teruel), near the village of Luco de Jiloca.
Entrambasaguas is of great historical importance, since it has not only served as the meeting point of two major rivers in the Jiloca District but has also been a crossroads of ancient traditional paths, thus making it a strategic location and enclave.
Given its importance, several settlements were successively built in the area. They benefited from the confluence of the two valleys and the narrowing of the basin of the River Jiloca.
Its name derives from an ancient medieval settlement, which is believed to have been located at the mouth of the River Pancrudo.
The first documented settlement, known as Tramasaguas, was mentioned for the first time in 1205, and it seems to have disappeared in the late 19th century. Some traces of the wall can still be seen near the Virgen del Rosario hermitage.
Here there are some buildings of great heritage importance, such as the Virgen del Rosario hermitage, the Wayside Cross with which it shares its name, an old Roman bridge spanning the waters of the River Pancrudo and an old railway bridge belonging to the Calatayud-Valencia railway line.
The latter is famous for an accident in 1904, in which a night train derailment on the eve of Midsummer’s Day, killing five people. This incident and the line’s austerity and lack of resources, under the management of a Belgian-owned company, account for the subsequent interest in nationalising the entire railway line.
In short, Entrambasaguas is among the most interesting natural and cultural areas in the Jiloca basin. Over just 50 metres you can see several bridges, a medieval settlement, a hermitage, a wayside cross and other hydraulic facilities.
