Old Luco de Jiloca station
The old Luco de Jiloca station is in the village of Luco de Jiloca, in the municipality of Calamocha, in the Jiloca District of Teruel.
This railway infrastructure was part of the old railway line that connected the Zaragoza municipality of Calatayud with Valencia, crossing the province of Teruel through the Jiloca Valley, and it connected Burbáguena and Calamocha.
It is a building with an austere appearance, consisting of a single rectangular nave topped by a gabled roof with a ribbed moulding. It is made of ashlar masonry with lintelled arched openings and a raised keystone. This station uses a similar model to other railway infrastructure on the line, such as the Calamocha, Villafranca, Báguena and Caminreal stations.
Today, this building is used to house a small nursery.
The history and origin of Luco de Jiloca station are tied to the development of the Ferrocarril Central de Aragón, more specifically the Calatayud-Valencia railway line, which connected Calatayud with the Spanish Levante, crossing the province of Teruel.
This old railway line ran through the Valle del Jiloca and had a track length of about 300 km. It entered service in July 1901 and was characterised by the sobriety and austerity of its infrastructure.
Construction of the line began in the 1890s and was the responsibility of the Compañía del Ferrocarril Central de Aragón, a Belgian-owned company. In 1941, management of the company passed to the recently-founded RENFE and it ended up being closed in 1987.
Currently, only part of the route, between Zaragoza and Sagunto, still operates.
