Old Báguena station
The old Báguena station is in the municipality that bears its name, in the District of Jiloca, Teruel.
This railway infrastructure was part of the old Calatayud-Valencia railway line, which crossed the province of Teruel, and was used as a connection point between the village of San Martín del Río and the halt in the municipality of Burbáguena.
It is a building with almost no decoration, but is large in size. It consists of a single nave on a rectangular plan, built on a single storey and covered with a hipped roof.
This infrastructure was built of ashlar masonry, with various lintelled arched openings and a raised keystone, similar to the other stations on this railway line, which varied in size according to the importance of the place where they were located.
It has an adjoining building of a similar size and a quadrangular floor plan, that of a toilet. Moreover, picnic and rest area has been provided at one side.
The purpose of the Calatayud-Valencia line was to connect the Zaragoza municipality of Calatayud with the Levante area, crossing the province of Teruel and stretching to Valencia.
The project, commonly known as the Ferrocarril Central de Aragón, ran almost the entire length of the Jiloca Valley, had a track around 300 km long, and the line was opened and went into service in 1901.
Construction of the line began in the 1890s undertaken by the Compañía del Ferrocarril Central de Aragón, mostly with Belgian capital. In 1941 management was transferred to the newly-created RENFE (Red Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Españoles), before it was finally closed in 1987.
Currently, only part of the route, between Zaragoza and Sagunto, still operates.
