Castle of Los Rojas
Located on a rocky massif on the eastern edge of the diapir, the Castle of Los Rojas is a control point for the entrance to the Burgos comarca of El Bureba from the moorland and over the salt flats in the area. The original castle was located on an elevation overlooking the crater of the salt vein, now known as El Castellar.
Although it has passed through several hands throughout its history, it was the Los Rojas family that gave the castle and walls their current appearance. For years, they exercised control over the exploitation of the salt mine.
In addition to the functions of guarding the territory and defending the salt mines, the castle was also used as a prison. In fact, in 1528, from 22 January to 19 May, the ambassadors of the Clementine League (France, Milan, Florence, England and Venice) were imprisoned there on the orders of Emperor Charles I.
Although it lost its relevance during the 18th century, in 1808 it was used by the French in the context of the War of Independence, and served as a watchtower during the Carlist wars of the 19th century.
