Church of Santa María del Castillo
The church of Santa María del Castillo (Our Lady of the Castle) is a flowery Gothic Catholic church built between the 15th and 16th centuries.
Also known as Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Our Lady of the Assumption), it owes its name to its location, at the top of Cervera de Pisuerga, where there used to be a castle.
Erected on a rock that overlooks the entire village of Cervera, the church has a single nave with starred vaults in the central nave, the main chapel and the transept. Its chevet is polygonal in shape and has a choir at its base.
The facade has a simple Renaissance style semicircular arch, which was one of the last parts to be built. The chevet has a simple tower with a square floor plan and semicircular loopholes.
It was declared a National Historical and Artistic Monument because of the religious art inside, especially the Adoration of the Kings, a Flemish painting from 1495 by Juan de Flandes, which is located in a polychrome walnut wood altarpiece with bas-reliefs in the St. Anne's chapel. This chapel is the oldest and it was built with ashlar masonry.
Also noteworthy are the Renaissance-style main altarpiece with its bas-reliefs, the Crucifix, and the 14th century Gothic polychrome wooden image of Nuestra Señora del Castillo (Our Lady of the Castle), the town's patron saint. This artistic treasure also includes a 13th century Romanesque Christ of the Battles.
