Rock hermitage of San Vicente
The St. Vincent hermitage-cave is located in the Palencia Mountains on the road to Vado, near where the Pisuerga and Ribera rivers join.
This archaeological site is known as Vallejera and is home to the remains of one of the largest hermitages in Spain, the Alto Pisuerga.
The hermitage consists of a large rectangular room with several entrances and rough openings. A chapel was dug to the east, separated from the rest by a step, which may have been enclosed by a masonry apse.
It is surrounded by a necropolis with twenty human-shaped tombs dug into the rock that date back to the 8th and 9th centuries. Other buildings, which are no longer seen today, must have stood next to it, including a 12th century Romanesque church, which was part of a monastic complex. It was definitively abandoned in the mid-19th century.
