Hinojosa de la Sierra
Hinojosa de la Sierra is a town in the El Valle and La Vega Cintora district of the municipality of El Royo.
This small town, situated at the foot of the Carcaña mountain range and bordered by the Duero river, has a rich history as a town and manor of Mendoza. Its famous Renaissance-style fortress, dating back to the 15th century, is a testament to this heritage. There are some remains of the former keep that still exist. This castle, with a double-walled enclosure, was vacated by the Hurtado Mendoza family to relocate to another palace in the same locality.
The hamlet's most outstanding elements are the second and majestic construction, with its double porticoed gallery, and the church of La Asunción, which boasts a beautiful Romanesque doorway and its 17th-century altarpiece. The surrounding area also contains the remains of a former castro.
The town, situated just 16 km from the capital, boasts a stunning location, nestled amidst oak and holm oak forests at the foot of the Carcaña mountain range. The seasonal lagoons of La Serna and Arenal also merit attention. Ornithologists will find these lagoons an excellent location to observe herons and other migratory birds that typically make this area their temporary home.
