Vinuesa
Vinuesa is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Soria, situated at an altitude of 1,107 metres above sea level at the foot of the Picos de Urbión and the Cebollera mountain range. The town is situated in the heart of the Tierra de Pinares, also known as Soria Verde.
The area's strategic location has made it an attractive destination for tourists, who have given it the name La Corte de los Pinares due to its rich forests. It is worth noting that the village is situated in an area where the Duero and the Revinuesa rivers meet, near the Laguna Negra, a legendary lake, and the glacial cirques of Urbión.
The municipality has its roots in the Neolithic period, as evidenced by the discovery of arrowheads and axes in the area known as El Bardo. Furthermore, experts have evidence of the arrival of the Pelendones in the fifth century BC, a Celtiberian people who settled at the confluence of the two rivers mentioned above, creating Visontium, the oldest reference to Vinuesa. Subsequently, the Roman, Gothic and Muslim populations would traverse these lands, leaving their imprint on the streets of Vinuesa.
The town centre is a testament to the passage of numerous cultures, with the palace houses built by the wool merchants being a notable example. Only a portion of a road that traversed the municipality and a bridge remain from the Roman era.
The church of Nuestra Señora del Pino is a prominent feature of the village's architectural landscape. The building was constructed in 1591 and is a fine example of Gothic Renaissance architecture. Additionally, the municipality boasts several hermitages, including the 16th-century chapel of La Soledad, San Mateo, San Pedro and San Antón.
The civil buildings include the palace of the Marquises of Vilueña, also known as the palace of the Valtueña family, which dates from the 17th century. This building is notable for its four balconies and coat of arms. The palace of Don Pedro de Neyla, known as the Archbishop of Palermo, is a 17th-century building that was owned by the church for many years. It was later donated to the town for use as a school by Matías Ramos. Finally, we would be remiss if we did not mention the oldest house in the town: the Casa de los Ramos, built in 1778. This is a piece of furniture that demonstrates the skill of the woodworker.
The economy of Vinuesa is primarily focused on the primary sector, with agriculture and sheep farming, as well as the exploitation of the nearby forests, representing the main sources of employment for the town's inhabitants. It should be noted that the Cañada Galiana or Cañada Real Riojana, which was one of the cattle routes used for transhumance on the Castilla-Extremadura axis, passes through this area. Furthermore, rural and mountain tourism has also seen significant growth in recent years.
The people of Visona celebrate the patron saint festivities of the Virgen del Pino and San Roque during the second fortnight of August. The main event is the "pingada de los Mayos". The local community has planted specimens of European red pine over 25 metres long in the Plaza Mayor.
