Candín
In the heart of the Los Ancares Biosphere Reserve lies Candín, a small mountain village which, with just 54 inhabitants, is the capital of the municipality bearing the same name. The main administrative services of the valley are concentrated here, alongside the essence of traditional life in El Bierzo.
The village is divided into two areas: the one closest to the road being the newer area where the shops and basic services are located. However, ascending to the upper part of the village reveals the oldest section, where one can still admire the houses that define the traditional architecture of the area, based on stone masonry and slate roofs. Here stands the Church of the Virgen de las Angustias, patron saint of the town.
In the surrounding area, visitors can visit the Río Seco, the mineral springs called Fumeixín, and the multiple deposits that constitute the ancient gold mines from the Early Roman Empire period.
The town hosts many festivals throughout the year: La Cruz in June, San Lorenzo on 10 August, San Quintín in October, and Santa Bárbara in December.
