La Maquinilla Greenway
La Maquinilla Greenway uses an old mining railway line connecting the Cabeza de Vaca and El Porvenir mines, in the Córdoba municipalities of Belmez and Peñarroya, respectively.
Promoted by the "Compañía de los Ferrocarriles Andaluces", this line connected the main mines in the area and became the main distribution line for products from the mining area, with up to 35 km of track. It also provided a free passenger transport service to take villagers to their jobs in the surrounding mines and industries.
The railway, which was popularly known as "La Maquinilla", was gradually dismantled from the early 1960s and closed down for good in the eighties. Today, an 8-kilometre section of this old route was rehabilitated for recreational use, running between mining shafts and rubble, from the Cerco de Peñarroya, in Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo, to the junction with the N-432 in Belmez.
This route, together with the Guadiato Greenway Nature Trail and the Guadiato, La Maquinilla, Fuente Obejuna and Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo Greenways, forms part of a series of routes that follow the course of old mining railways, which together have been called the Guadiato and Los Pedroches Greenway, as they run through these two comarcas of Córdoba.
