Guadiato Greenway
This Greenway reuses part of the Córdoba section of the old Peñarroya-Puertollano railway for recreational use. This line was part of the narrow-gauge railway network built by the Sociedad Minera y Metalúrgica de Peñarroya (SMMP) to connect all its mining operations.
Restoration of the line is ongoing and will connect the Guadiato Greenway Nature Trail with the village of Belmez. Today, the enabled section reaches from the bridge over the Risquillo stream to the Aguas Vivas farmhouse.
Although the section converted into a Greenway starts at the old El Soldado station, with the vestiges of its mining past visible in a peculiar landscape of dismantled hills and ruins of mining infrastructures. It runs mainly through a landscape of holm oak woodland with pastureland and grassland. Over the course of the route, the visitor passes by different structures related to its past as a railway line, such as halts, railway huts or the aforementioned bridge.
This route, together with the Guadiato Greenway Nature Trail and the La Minería, La Maquinilla, Fuente Obejuna and Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo Greenways, forms part of a series of routes that follow the course of old mining railways, which together have been named the Guadiato and Los Pedroches Greenway, as they run through these two comarcas of Cordoba.
