Belmez former station
Belmez former train station is located in the municipality of Belmez, in Córdoba.
When the railway from Peñarroya to Puertollano was in operation, this station was located at kilometre point 8.501, between the halt stations of El Antolin and Cámaras Altas. In reality, this stop was called Belmez-Ermita, because it was located next to the Shrine of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, and so as not to confuse it with Belmez station, which belonged to another railway line whose buildings were demolished in 2007 due to their deteriorated condition.
The infrastructure was inaugurated in the early 20th century, with the start-up of the Peñarroya-Puertollano section of the narrow-gauge mining railway that was intended to link the towns of Puertollano, in Ciudad Real, and Fuente del Arco, in Badajoz.
This line was operated by the Sociedad Minera y Metalúrgica de Peñarroya (SMMP), and from 1924 it was operated by its subsidiary, the Compañía de los Ferrocarriles de Peñarroya y Puertollano. In the middle of the century it passed into state hands and the old trains were replaced by diesel engines. The line mainly saw freight and mail traffic, until the section was closed in the 1970s due to its low profitability.
In 1995, the facilities were used to build the Belmez municipal swimming pool, preserving the original French architectural style of the main building.
