Common Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)
The hawthorn is a shrub or small tree of the Rosaceae family that can reach up to 6 metres in height, although it is sometimes bushy. Its scientific name, Crataegus, refers to the hardness of its wood and monogyna to the fact that its flower has only one carpel.
Its leaves are small, lobed, deciduous and thorny. It flowers abundantly in spring, with a multitude of small white flowers. Red fruits, spherical and of some decorative value as they remain on the tree throughout the winter.
