Torrijo del Campo
Another of the villages included in the Jiloca District is Torrijo del Campo. Lying on the left bank of the River Jiloca, the village has a long history, as shown by the various archaeological remains found in the area.
The oldest finds are from the Iberian period, such as those found in Cerro del Moro, an ancient village in whose cemetery several vessels have been found. A variety of elements have also been found in the Eras and Balseta areas which are from the Iberian and medieval periods, respectively. However, there is no doubt that the most important and most prestigious finding in the municipality was the Iberian bronze plate that was hidden on the Huertos Altos path and which is now in the Museum of Teruel under the name of “Torrijo Bronze.”
On the other hand, one can walk around the streets of an old medieval village known as Villacadima, a stately site belonging to the Catalán de Ocón family, which was not governed by either the crown or the community and where some buildings and the boundary markers are still preserved.
The village’s most important heritage sites are the 18th century parish church of San Pedro, the 15th century San Fabián and San Sebastián hermitages, and Santa Bárbara heritage, the most modern, built in 1723.
The people of Torrijo del Campo hold their patron saint festivities in August and they are considered among the best festivities in all of Aragon. They provide a meeting point for all the residents the villages throughout the area and the popular “Bajada del Jiloca” is held here.
