Cirira tunnel
The Santander-Mediterranean Nature Trail follows in the footsteps of the old Santander-Mediterranean Railway, originally envisioned to link the port of Santander with the Mediterranean.
In 1930, the last section to be built was inaugurated, linking Trespaderne with Cidad-Dosante, some 45 kilometres long. But the outbreak of the Civil War and the economic difficulties of the post-war period put an end to this ambitious project, leaving behind grandiose infrastructures like La Engaña tunnel, at almost 7 kilometres long.
A further 15 shorter tunnels were to be drilled, ranging from 46 to 592 metres in length. One of them is the Ciria Tunnel, located at kilometre point 42 of the Valcorba-Ciria section of what is now the Santander-Mediterranean Greenway. This much more modest tunnel is 245 metres long and curved.
It is currently illuminated by a system of solar panels, although it is recommended that walkers carry a torch to help them find their way around inside the tunnel.
