Old Portillo de Soria station
The Santander-Mediterranean railway was planned to link the ports of Santander and Valencia but, for various reasons, it was never completed. Nevertheless, it was in operation for more than fifty years from Cidad-Dosante in the north of Burgos, to Calatayud, where it connected with another line to Teruel and Valencia.
Work began in 1924, when the Government approved the concession, and practically the entire line was opened between 1927 and 1930. With the outbreak of the Civil War, the works on the line to Santander were stopped and although there were several attempts to reactivate this project, the Stabilisation Plan of 1959 put an end to the initiative, with the operating line ultimately closed in early 1985.
Portillo had a siding on the line. Today, the complex, which served the village and was located at kilometre point 60.684, looks completely in ruins. It had a passenger terminal and a small service hut located a few metres away. It is quite similar to other sidings on the line, although its location and stunning surroundings make it particularly special.
The interior and exterior of the main building is badly deteriorated, so walkers on the nature trail are advised to admire the architectural features from a safe distance.
