Shrine of la Virgen de la Serna
The Shrine of the Virgen de la Serna brought fame to the municipality of Ciria for the miracles she was said performed, which saw her become the patron of the village.
The name of this virgin has Latin origins, relating to agriculture and the sown fields.
The church, which is distinguished by its large proportions, consists of a single rectangular nave that leads to the octagonal presbytery where there is a small, simple altar. On the wall behind it, is a small niche where the image of the patron of Ciria rests. The façade is whitewashed, which makes it stand out from the other stone masonry walls. We enter the shrine through a door with a semicircular arch. There are also semicircular arches in a porch located on one of the sides of the building, made of reddish bricks.
The residents of Ciria, who are very devoted to their patron, celebrate the festivities in honour of La Virgen de La Serna every 22 May, when they gather at the shrine, located three kilometres from the town centre, to venerate their virgin. Once there, a mass is celebrated in honour of the Virgin. After the Eucharist, the procession takes place with the image of the Virgin around the shrine and afterwards, the whole village takes the opportunity to spend the day in the vicinity of the esplanade of the hermitage celebrating an authentic brotherhood meal, and then bid farewell to their patron saint by singing a Salve.
