Old station of Modúbar de La Emparedada
Modúbar de la Emparedada station is located at kilometre point 197.1 of what was the old Santander-Mediterranean railway, which was intended to connect Santander and Valencia in order to provide rapid dispatch for all goods from the inland provinces.
The Burgos-Cabezón de la Sierra section was inaugurated in August 1927. It was transferred to RENFE in 1941 with the nationalisation of the railways.
In late 1984 it ceased operating when the line was closed. Today, the passenger terminal and the old warehouse have been converted into a private residence, incorporating a railway museum set up by its owners. It is not open to the public, but visits are possible upon request to the owners.
The owners renovated the entire building, incorporating the original tiles. The garden is illuminated by lanterns salvaged from along the line. Inside the building, the old passengers’ waiting hall still features a yellow bar that was used to mark the waiting times at the ticket office. At the entrance to the stationmaster's house we can find the telephone with which the station managers communicated with the rest of the nodes on the line, including a switchboard with the logo of the Red Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Españoles (National Network of Spanish Railways).
This plot also houses a small building that was used as a lamp shop and staff services during the railway era. Today, it houses an ethnographic museum that depicts the daily life of past generations.
