Vivar del Cid
Vivar del Cid belongs to the municipality of Quintanilla Vivar, some seven kilometres from Burgos. It is traditionally considered the village where Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, El Cid, was born, which is why many of the festivals and traditions of Vivar del Cid revolve around this giant figure from medieval history and the reconquest of Spain from the Moors. From the names of its streets to the different sculptures that are located throughout the municipality, they repeatedly remind us that this was the village where Ek Cid Campeador, one of the most important figures in medieval literature, was born.
Among the points of architectural interest is the Church of San Miguel Arcángel, whose current building dates from the 16th century, although various excavations have uncovered a necropolis dating from the 11th and 13th centuries, housing a Romanesque font of unknown origin. The Convent of El Espino is also deserving of a visit, where, according to tradition, a chest was kept with the only manuscript of the epic poem Cantar de Mío Cid, today in the National Library. Don’t forget to sample some of the local pastries and sweets, with names like Lágrimas de doña Jimena, reminding us once again that this is the land where Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar was born and lived.
