Sotopalacios
Sotopalacios is a town in the province of Burgos, just 10 km from the provincial capital. The first documents mentioning the existence of Sotopalacios date back to the early 12th century.
Among the most outstanding elements of the heritage of Sotopalacios is its palace. This palace, also known as Castillo del Cid, was built in the 11th century and has passed through the hands of different noble families throughout history, such as the Manrique family. Today, it is in the hands of a private owner who uses it as a home and who has been responsible for much of the restoration of the site, making it one of the best preserved castles in the province of Burgos.
Among the religious buildings in Sotopalacios is the Church of Nuestra Señora de Acorro, a Romanesque church built in the mid-15th century, with the sacristy, the main church and the altar all still well preserved today. Also worth a visit is the Church of San Martín de Tours, a Renaissance temple built in the 16th century with a main nave and two adjoining chapels on the right-hand side.
In terms of its economy, the development of Sotopalacios has been linked over the last few decades to the production of blood sausage. There are currently three factories in the town producing this delicacy, which has become one of the main attractions of this municipality and a key ingredient in its gastronomy. It is no coincidence that the Sotopalacios's local festivals of San Martín are centred around this product, taking place on the second Sunday in November.
Another important date on the calendar in Sotopalacios is 8 September when the local patron saint festivals take place.
