Necropolis of San Andrés
On a platform of sandstone rock, shortly after passing the railway line in Cigüenza, is the necropolis of San Andrés.
It is an ancient cemetery belonging to an early medieval settlement. After studying the morphology of these burials, experts estimate that this necropolis dates from the 8th and 9th centuries.
The complex consists of more than thirty-five anthropomorphic tombs carved into the limestone and covering the entire rocky platform. It is worth noting that in 2014 a study was carried out which revealed the existence of more graves that are now covered by vegetation.
As can be seen, the tombs are oriented in accordance with the medieval Christian ritual, with the head facing west and the feet pointing east-southeast. Morphologically, a similar number of bath graves and anthropomorphic graves are observed. Within the latter, the shape of the head varies, some with horseshoe-arched heads and others with quadrangular or rectilinear heads. Given the size of these graves, it seems that most of them correspond to individuals of a young age.
On the other hand, and as a curiosity, it should be noted that some of them have notches and ridges, undoubtedly intended to facilitate the fitting of covers that have not survived to the present day. There are also flashing slots.
