St. John the Baptist Parish Church
Located next to the road that connects the towns of Herrera and Cervera is the St. John the Baptist parish church in the district of Moarves de Ojeda. Its beautiful facade and frieze can be seen from the road in the direction of Cervera de Pisuerga.
It consists of a single nave and has a rectangular floor plan and a flat chevet. It was built in the 12th century in the late Romanesque style. Ashlar masonry was used in its construction.
As mentioned before, the most striking part of this church is its magnificent facade with its decorated windows and a frieze of coloured stones. The door has five archivolts with checkerboard detailing, mouldings with or without bezants, and the innermost one with acanthus leaves. The frieze has sculpted figures of the twelve apostles flanking a central Christ. Carefully carved, this figure stands out from the rest as the folds of his clothes can be seen. The relief is surrounded by the symbols of the four evangelists and its beauty is such that the work was described by Miguel de Unamuno as "Fiery incarnation".
Inside, apart from the image of St. John the Baptist, there is a 13th century Romanesque baptismal font in a truncated cone shape, which also depicts Christ and the apostles under a series of arches. The work is crowned with a top border decorated with plant motifs.
