John's Church
As the patron saint of this village, it was inevitable that a church would be dedicated to him. The parish church is located in the hamlet of Santibáñez de Ecla in the province of Palencia.
It was built in 1319 on the site where an old castle once stood. It is a simple building with a single nave, a ribbed wooden roof, and a square apse covered with a ribbed vault. This vault is supported by pillars and capitals that are decorated with several leaves ending in balls in the main arch and staggered buttresses.
From the outside, the doorway is noteworthy with its pointed internal arch and semicircular archivolts, and two columns with capitals decorated with leaves and cauliculi.
Its greatest hidden treasure is the secret passageway in the tower on the upper south wall where you can cross to the other side of the building.
This is one of the last Romanesque temples erected in this area of Castile based on the date it was built. Inside there is a Solomonic altarpiece with the sculptures of St. Roque and St. James and a variety of 16th century images.
