Fines
Fines is a town and municipality located in an extensive plain at the foot of the Sierra de las Estancias, embraced by the waters of the river Almanzora in the northern part of the province of Almería, Andalusia. Part of its territory is located in the foothills of the Sierra de los Filabres within the Natura 2000 Network, which means that the area boasts an exuberant natural beauty where the Mediterranean scrubland plays a leading role along with plants such as thyme, rosemary, gorse and buttonbush (Santolina rosmarinifolia). As for the fauna of these lands, it is common to see animals such as the ocellated lizard (Lacerta lepida), the black-headed turtle (Testudo graeca) and the short-toed eagle (Circaetus gallicus).
The history of Fines dates back to the Copper Age, as evidenced by the remains found in the Loma de la Estación or in the Rambla de Las Horcas. During the Al-Andalus period, it remained part of the State of Tahal until the Christian conquest in 1492, when the town fell into the hands of Don Alonso Fernández de Córdoba, Lord of Alcaudete and Montemayor.
During the War of the Alpujarras and the expulsion of the Moors, the villages of the valley played a crucial role. Fines, in particular, was the birthplace of a young man, tried for facilitating the escape of Moors and avenging the death of his beloved, who inspired the literary work "El Tuzani de la Alpujarra" by Calderón de la Barca.
One of its most outstanding monuments is the Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, built in 1631, with its Mudejar style and wooden coffered ceiling, undoubtedly a testimony to the stabilisation of the population.
The economic development of the municipality has been linked to the exploitation of marble. In 1837, the first modern factory dedicated to the sawing and grinding of marble was opened, boosting the growth of the community and allowing its municipal autonomy in 1850. Today, the quarrying industry, including services such as logistics, manufacturing, machinery and workshops, plays a key role in the local economy, coexisting with diversified agriculture with olive trees, cereals, vines and maize.
As for the festivities in the municipality, in November, Fines celebrates the "Almería Tiene Norte" fair [Almería has north], a gastronomic and commercial fair that offers the opportunity to explore and enjoy the rich culinary diversity, artisan products and local traditions. In the last week of July, the Fair and Festivities in honour of San Esteban take place, with events and activities for all ages such as popular games, attractions and stands, fireworks displays and stalls with orchestras or DJs.
