The Patamolls de Montoliu are one of the most unique wetlands in the middle reaches of the River Segre and one of the most interesting natural sites in the area around the Riu Nature Trail. Located within the municipality of Montoliu de Lleida, they cover some 20 hectares on the left bank of the Segre, around the final stretch of a diversion canal branching off from the Canal d’Urgell, which flows into the river.
This area is notable for the excellent state of preservation of its riparian woodland, one of the best-developed in the region. The vegetation is dominated by poplars, black poplars, ash trees, willows and alders, with elms and tamarisk trees found in some areas. Alongside them lie extensive reedbeds and wet grasslands, creating a mosaic of habitats of great ecological richness.
The abundance of water makes the Patamolls a haven for numerous animal species, particularly birds. During the migratory seasons and in winter, it is common to see waders and waterbirds, while species such as the white stork, the black-winged stilt and the little-ringed plover find suitable areas here to rest or breed. Grey herons, various species of duck and numerous reed bed birds are also commonly found here.
In addition to its natural value, the site preserves elements linked to historical memory. Nearby lie the remains of defensive structures associated with the Segre Front during the Spanish Civil War, serving as a reminder of the strategic importance of this area between 1938 and 1939.
Listed in the Catalogue of Wetlands of Catalonia, the Patamolls de Montoliu are an excellent example of the biodiversity associated with the river ecosystems of the Segre. The contrast between the riverside woodland, the wetlands and the farmland surrounding the area makes this spot a particularly attractive stop for those wishing to discover the natural riches of the river valley.
